Starting back in the days when cricket was very much in its formative throes, and almost unrecognisable to the modern incarnation, David Frith's book is a wonderful history of the merchants of speed - the slingers, flingers (and even a couple of chuckers) who make cricket at the highest levels a game of nerve and determination. Filled to the brim with astonishing anecdotes and statistics, this is a wonderful read.
An updated version (this only covers up to about 1982) would be fantastic - the fearsome West Indians of the 1980's, Wasim & Waqar, McGrath, Gillespie & Lee, and the South Africans Donald, Pollock & Steyn would all merit mention and add further lustre to this already fine book.
